Day 3: IRD Arrived + KiwiSaver πŸ’°

Your IRD number should arrive today or tomorrow. Once it does, the real setup begins. Here's what to tackle.

    Check IRD number status

    Log into myIR. If it's arrived (1–3 days), write it down. If not yet, skip to Step 12.

  2. 11

    Give IRD number to your bank

    Walk into branch or update in banking app. Without this, you're taxed at the highest rate (45%). Critical.

    Apply for KiwiSaver

    NZ's retirement savings scheme. Your employer must contribute 3%. You contribute 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10%. Optional but strongly recommended β€” it's free money from your employer + government.

  4. 13

    Apply for an 18+ card or NZ driver licence

    You'll need NZ photo ID for bars, job applications, etc. Hospitality NZ 18+ card ($55) is fastest. Or convert your overseas licence. Immigration NZ: "You can generally drive in New Zealand on your overseas driver licence for the first 18 months."

    Set up a NZ phone plan properly

    Upgrade from the airport SIM. Compare Skinny, Spark, One NZ, 2degrees. Prepaid is flexible when you're new.
